Spring Cleaning: Detoxifying the Heart and Spirit

“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past.” Isaiah 43:18 (NIV)

Detoxing the SpiritSpring brings us fresh, new energy and represents new life. In taking note of the blossoming of new life, we can learn to let new emotions, dreams, and hopes come into fruition by shedding past negativity. The verse above speaks to living in the now by letting go of the past. The following tips on spiritual detoxification can help you renew your life, as well as your interpersonal experiences.

  • Let Go and Let God. One vital aspect of purifying the heart of fear is to have faith in God. Know He is the one who handles all our fears and worries. Cultivating a connection with God produces hope, which heals painful wounds and produces joy.
  • Practice Forgiveness. Knowing everyone is human and we make mistakes should be enough understanding to forgive others. Forgiving others liberates us from the arms of anger; forgiving yourself cultivates self-love.

“For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.” Matthew 6:14 (NIV)

  • Mind Your Words. Speak life into those around you by using a language of support, inspiration, praise and guidance. Gossip, faultfinding and self-centered communication are ways to emphasize narcissism and negativity, which create toxic relationships.

“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” Ephesians 4:29 (NIV)

In our daily dealings, it is always important to remember God is the only true judge. In this same breath, remembering we are only human and often times doing the best we can should remind us to be more compassionate. Keeping an inspiring attitude, as well as practicing compassion can work against resentment and anger, which dampen our spirits and can destroy our interpersonal connections.

“Do to others as you would have them do to you.” Luke 6:31 (NIV)
