When thinking about spring cleaning and how it applies to every area of our lives, I was at a loss as to how I would express my thoughts. So I did what any good writer does and asked someone else for his. Bouncing ideas and feedback off of other people is essential no matter what you’re undertaking, whether putting together a masterpiece manuscript or a monthly blog post. It occurred to me to ask the youth pastor at my church about his thoughts on spiritual spring cleaning since he is someone who is always taking on something new. Whether starting new programs, traveling to new places as a featured speaker, or just updating his look with a new Fossil bag, this guy is really cutting edge. I wanted to introduce him to you since the next goal on his frontier is starting to write his own book. Here’s his fresh take on the subject:
Q. When you hear the words “spring cleaning” what is the first thing that comes to your mind?
A. It’s a time of organizing during which I get rid of things I don’t use anymore and find things I thought I lost a long time ago.
Q. If you had to apply the general concept of spring cleaning to a person’s spiritual life, how would you describe it?
A. It is never too late to recommit and resubmit our lives to God. A spiritual spring cleaning is good from time to time, but even better than that is a daily reconnection with God. Confessing and asking for forgiveness is part of a daily walk.
Q. When was the last time you did a spiritual spring cleaning in your own life and what happened?
A. During the beginning of this year I entered into a new chapter in my life. 2013 was a very difficult year, but God walked by my side through it all. I decided to put all my worries on His shoulders, allowing Him to continue working in my circumstances and shaping me into the person He wants me to become. I’m already seeing the change.
As you can see, spiritual spring cleaning is an endeavor centered around value. It’s not necessarily about “out with the old and in with the new” as it is about rejuvenating your own point of view and seeing your life with a new set of eyes.
